The long-awaited revision to the ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard is now available. You can buy the new version, ASME Y14.5-2009, from ASME at their website, asme.org. It's $169 for either the print version or a PDF version. You save the $18 shipping by ordering the PDF version, but be prepared to load some software in order to view the PDF – it's protected and only works on one computer, the physical machine that you download and open it on. So if you have a desktop and a laptop, you'll want to download the file using the same machine that you plan to access the standard on.
There are lots of changes to the standard, many of which are insignificant (notice the "M" is missing after the Y14.5 – the standard is still equally useful with metric or conventional inch dimensioning), but several changes are important.
One thing that those familiar with the 1994 version of the standard will notice is that flatness can now "legally" be applied to a feature of size; there's no longer a need to use straightness to control the flatness of a center plane on a washer or slot, for example, and so the MMC modifier can be used with flatness when it's applied to a feature of size. It's still illegal, of course, to use an MMC modifier on flatness applied to a surface.
There are two ways to get up-to-speed: a 90 minute webinar that briefly covers the changes or an onsite classroom-based course that goes into more depth.
A live, 90 minute ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T Overview Webinar on Monday, January 25, 2010, from 12:00 Noon - 1:30PM, where we’ll cover the most important concepts in enough detail that you’ll be pointed in the right direction. The webinar is intended for those who are somewhat familiar with GD&T and will include a copy of the new standard as well: $300 per person. (It's only $130 if you already have a copy of the standard.) Please
